Frequently Asked Questions

What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?

Chinese herbal medicine is the main treatment method in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is the world’s oldest continually practiced professional medicine, over 3,000 years old. It is based on individualized pattern diagnosis, disease diagnosis, and consideration of the patient’s constitution. The patient receives a custom-written herbal prescription unique to his or her immediate condition.

What is moxibustion?

Moxibustion is a treatment method that applies heat to certain meridian points by burning a material called “moxa”, which is made from leaves of the mugwort plant.

How are herbal medicines taken?

The traditional method is drinking a tea prepared by boiling the raw herbs. There are also herbal pills, capsules, powdered extracts ( to be mixed with hot water), etc.

Do herbal medicines have side effects?

Most of the components or herbal medicine have a low toxicity compared to common over-the-counter western drugs. When prescribed according to a correct TCM pattern diagnosis, there should be beneficial healing results with few, if any, side effects.

What should I know about my treatment plan?

Ziyang Zhou will explain the nature of your problem and make a treatment recommendation. The number of treatments depends on the duration, severity, and nature of your complaint. The treatment options may include other modes of Chinese medical treatment, such as moxibustion, electro-acupuncture, herbal teas, pills, or ointments. It is most common for treatment to include an herbal formula as well as acupuncture.

If you have questions that were not addressed in this FAQ, please ask Ziyang Zhou. You can have a free consultation by phone or in person regarding the nature of you concern and how Chinese medicine can help you.

Insurance & Pricing

Our clinic participates in most major insurance programs and networks. However, insurance plans vary in coverage so acupuncture is not a guaranteed benefit, even when Dr. Ziyang Zhou is an in-network provider. Please call your insurance company to verify or our office can verify it for you. We are proud to now be covered by Veterans Affairs Patient Centered Community Care (VAPC3). See our "Before Your Visit" page in Patient Information for more information. Currently Medicare covers acupuncture for lower-back pain only when it is performed by medical doctors or in their offices. Licensed acupuncturists are not covered because we’re not in-network with Medicare. Without insurance coverage, we offer a discounted rate of $130 for the first treatment and $105 for each additional treatment. Or we offer a prepaid package of 5 treatments for $95 each for a total of $475 ($75 in savings).
